meant to be

before dinner last night, matt's mom noticed that i was still wearing my shell necklace. i told her i've had it on since the summer of '04 [jones beach.] and that i've only taken it off once, when i had to change the string. she lit up and smiled with an understanding look, and proceeded to tell me one of the sweetest stories i've ever heard.

******

when she and her husband were first engaged, she was given the option of a ring or a trip to california. "obviously, i chose california," she said.
obviously.

they made their trek down to california and stopped at their first night's destination. matt's mother stepped out of the car and staring up at her from the ground was a silver ring with a turquoise stone.

she slid it on her finger and there it stayed until just a few years ago when it finally wore out and broke.

but don't worry, she still has it.

:)
